6. The e-Unit

Another important feature was that the length of the entrance was twice its internal width, that is, the width and the length were in the ratio of 1:2. Again this is a basic principle which is followed in the majority of the megalithic structures, it is here referred to as the e-unit (Fig. 2). As seen from Table 1, there is another temple together with the ones already mentioned  which does not follow this principle. This is the south temple at Mnajdra.

 It was noted that the main doorway of most of the temples consists of either three pairs or two pairs of megaliths. There is some indication that the  first pair of some of the latter type was to be one e-unit long (Table 1). The clearest examples are Hagar Qim and Ta’ Hagrat.
